Welcome to "Sportsman's Paradise." We are sometimes also known as "the twin cities." Together our population is about 380,000, big enough to enjoy but small enough to feel like home. Our name implies that there is always something "outdoorsy" to do and there is. We have some of the best hunting and fishing around in our many area lakes and forests. You can also swim, water ski, or just relax and watch our abundant wildlife. We also have baseball, football, hockey, golf and horse-racing. The Independence Bowl has gained national attention as has the Nike Open and the Super Derby.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Shreveport was founded by the Shreve Town Company in 1836 to link the Red River with the newly formed Republic of Texas by way of the Texas Trail. Captain Henry Miller Shreve was responsible for clearing the 180 mile log jam which clogged the Red River and the village of Shreve Town was born. Shreveport was officially incorporated in 1871.
Shreveport has multiple historic landmarks. Its 64 block area of downtown is on the National Regristry of Historic Places. We are second only to New Orleans in regard to histoical places.
Barksdale Air Force Base, which opened in 1933, is also a National Landmark and this areas biggest employer. Other large employers are General Motors, the 5 Casinos, and LSU Medical Center and LSU Bio-Research Center.
Today the Red River is once again navigable and is being developed as a shipping port to the Gulf OF Mexico.
